Hard Rain: a workshop inspired by the photo exhibition at St Martin's.

led by Linda Murgatroyd

Hard Rain is a powerful exhibition of photos assembled by Mark Edwards, over the last 30 years, which portrays the impact of climate change in various parts of the Globe. It has recently been showing at several venues and a group of us went to spend some time with it at St Martin's in the Fields in London's Trafalgar Square. As well as the outdoor exhibition, and some big photos in the lobby under the courtyard, there is a video - set to Bob Dylan's music which inspired the title of the exhibition, and with some commentary from the photographer himself. See http://www.hardrainproject.com/

After watching this video, we each spent some time with a few of the photos - sketching our responses, and then came together in the Dick Shepherd chapel, to respond in word collage.

After sharing some of our responses, we wrote the following poem:

‘Hard Rain’ Reflections

Making images amidst the bustle
I saw people watching…
… and hope we left thinking,
Aware of nonsensical stupidity,
“Let us defy the machines of greed!”

Hard-working hands that hold and heal,
Regenerating the empty land.
We cannot destroy nature:
…we are part of it,
We can only destroy ourselves.

Growing our awareness, we can heal our Hell;
Let us protect the Earth we love.
